What does “Horoscope” mean?

Astrology is such an intricate subject that any reading, any explanation, any linkage is insufficient to satisfy the quest. And well it should be as it deals with the most complicated life form on Earth, We the humans.... If you are a novice or even if have some understanding about Astrology then you should be familiar with basic premise of the subject...

We all must have at some point come across a squarish box or a circle with 12 compartments and some numbers written over there and then must have wondered how can somebody predict about my life through this weird box.... Is he insane or a quack??? Actually that’s what we call a “Horoscope”....

Horoscope is a pen and picture of not only our present life but also of past lives too... It is the placement of planets in the zodiac at the time of our birth... As the time and place of our birth can’t change thus the placement of planets at that particular point of time also remains same for that individual....  Below is the sample horoscope wherein you can see it is divided into 12 houses numbering from 1 to 12 representing 12 signs of zodiac viz. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, and then there are nine planets viz. Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in different houses...  

The 12 houses of our horoscope represents our whole physical existence, our mental inclinations, our materialistic world, our spiritual upliftment... It is like an X ray and CT scan of our being.... It is answers to the questions that why am I like this, why is it happening with me, why am I not happy in life even after having every possible material wealth, what am I doing in this profession while my passion is something else, why don’t I love my partner, why can’t I quit smoking and many more..... There are many styles of horoscope, the one above is the North Indian style, there are South Indian, Eastern Indian and Western style charts too but basically they all are same...There are lot of significations attached to each house which I would take up in another article... Right now let us try to visualise the horoscope as a body wherein the 1st house shows our head, 2nd house represents face, eyes, ears and mouth, 3rd house stands for chest and breasts, 4th house is our heart, 5th house is stomach and digestive system, 6th house represents waist and hips, 7th house shows genitals, 8th house stands for private parts, 9th house depicts thighs, 10th house is our knees, 11th house shows legs and 12th house denotes feet (as per the classic Phaldeepika)... Similarly the nine planets signifies a whole lot of aspects of our life but very broadly Sun is our Soul, Moon our Mind, Jupiter is Wisdom, Mercury is Intellect, Mars is Courage, Venus is Love and Passion, Saturn denotes Efforts vis a vis Results, Rahu is materialistic desire and Ketu is spiritual side of ours... The interplay of these planets and their position in houses of our horoscope determine our path and journey of this life.... 

We all know that Earth and the planets revolve around the Sun and Earth is even rotating on its own axis... So the position of planets in zodiac with respect to Earth will be different for the child born at different place and different time... Remember that the houses are fixed in every horoscope, it is the position of planets that change... And yes I forgot to mention the meaning of Zodiac; Zodiac is a circular belt in the sky wherein all the planets co-exist and it is divided into 12 compartments of 30 degrees, each known as the Sign of Zodiac....

It is my earnest request to everyone to beware of the quacks and impostors who claim to tell the exact date of any event, names and addresses of your family members or business partners.... they are not astrologers as there’s no such methodology available till date which can predict that....Even great Maharishi Parashar who is the father of astrology never claimed that....
